Onboarding tutorials: a tour over the real screens

How ready-made iDos Games tutorials work - onboarding flows that highlight any element of the game, a hint with Next and Skip, steps that wait for a real action, a reward and a funnel - and how to set them up in the dashboard.

Updated: Русский

Tutorials are onboarding flows over the real screens of the game: each step highlights an element, dims the rest and shows a hint. A step can wait for the real action of the player, and every shown step goes to the funnel, so you see where new players drop off.

What the player sees

  • The highlighted element of any screen with the rest dimmed; the highlight follows the element when the layout changes.
  • A hint bubble with "Next" on steps the player closes and "Skip" when the flow allows it.
  • Steps that wait for a real action: the hint stays until the player does it in the game.
  • The reward at the end of the flow and the "Tutorials" list to replay allowed flows.

How it works

  • A step points at an element by its anchor: data-tutorial-anchor on any element of any module.
  • Flows can start by themselves when the title says so, for example on the first visit.
  • Every shown step is reported, which gives the onboarding funnel in the dashboard analytics.

Step 01Add the system to your project

Ask the AI coder: "Add an onboarding tour of the lobby". It installs the ready system with a five-step welcome tour and a gem reward.

Step 02Set it up in the dashboard

Open the dashboard, pick your project and go to Live Operations → v2 → Tutorial.

  • Create a flow: its steps, the anchor of each step and the hint text.
  • Choose how a step ends: the player closes it, or a real game action.
  • Set when the flow starts, whether it can be skipped or replayed, and the reward.

The AI button on the page opens an assistant: describe what you need, it proposes changes, and you review them and press Save.

Step 03Test and release

Check the system in the test version of your app. Settings go to the live app as a separate action - see publishing and links.

For developers

Tutorials work through client.tutorial in @idosgames/core; the overlay finds elements by their anchors.

TypeScript
// Any element of any module can be a tutorial anchor
<button data-tutorial-anchor="play:start">Play</button>
// Lobby tabs are tab:{featureID}, the profile button lobby:profile,
// a game's Play button play:{modeID}
  • Mark the elements a flow points at; an anchor without an element simply waits until it appears.
  • Steps are reported with reportStepShown and completed with completeStep: the overlay does it for you.

Every field is described in the tutorial-system skill, served by the SDK MCP server.

Frequently asked questions

Can a step wait for a real action?

Yes. A step can end on a game event instead of "Next", so the player learns by doing.

Can I see where players drop off?

Yes. Every shown step is reported, so the funnel of the flow shows the drop-off step by step.
